Just An Update
Hey! Been Super busy as usual. Just started school full time and working part time and with all that free time I’m either eating, sleeping, or screen printing. I have been busting my ass to get as many different designs on shirts as I can and the hard work will hopefully pay off soon. I haven’t been able to skate for over a month since I rolled my ankle and it’s still a little sore. I want it to be fully healed before I get back out there and try it again. I also plan on getting some SB Dunk Mids to better protect my ankles next time they feel like getting hurt.
I went on a little trip to DOS again with Jair and Tony for a short skate session last week. Got a few tricks on film but nothing too out of the ordinary. Tony Busted out some gigantic tricks as usual. Jair air over the hubba from the big three as well. For those who don’t know, a “hubba” is a cement ledge that is used as a railing down stairs… I didn’t know until a while ago so I figured I would avoid any questions.
Another little interesting bit of life in the recent past was an appointment I made with the man in charge of Cal’s Pharmacy skate shop. During the first photo shoot I had asked someone if I could take a look at the printing equipment inside the store but was disappointed to find out the man in charge of the equipment was out. They gave me a card with a number and told me to call and ask. After about three weeks with the card in my wallet slowly softening around the edges, I figured it was as good a time as any to call and see what would happen. I got a hold Kyle Reynolds who runs the place and he told me he was just on his way out, but that I should give him a call the next morning to go in and have a look. The next morning came and I called to confirm and soon left to my destination on the other side of the river. I arrived to see the “closed” sign still hanging in the window, only to see a man on the other side of the glass doors coming to open them up. It was Kyle. He and Burt were there getting the store ready before it opened at noon (it was about 11 am) and he soon showed me up stairs to the main printing room.
I have to admit that I was a little disappointed to see what I saw but really, I don’t know exactly what I was expecting either. The room was full of boxes upon boxes of blank tee shirts from Alstyle. There was what appeared to be a closet, a couch, a desk with an older model Mac. The other half of the room was where the press was. Although I couldn’t see any labels, it looked to be a simple 4 color 4 station press. There was a typical work desk for mixing inks a flash dryer mounted on a stand and a small 5 foot conveyor dryer. The place look as if ” a tornado hit it” to quote Kyle directly. I liked it. He explained that he wasn’t the man who did all the work in the room. They had hired a guy who now works at Nike to do the work for them. This guy had good experience in the screening industry and had all his own equipment and kyle gave him a place to work.
Although I was kind of sad that I didn’t get to learn too much about how they do things there, it was good to see that they have to go through the same process to get their product as well. It seemed to put it all on a level playing field which gives me hope for the future.
I am glad that I met Kyle as well and I hope that I can stay in contact with him and others at DOS in the months to come.
